Batch production of the second generation Lada Kalina cars has officially started on May 16. And though the newcomer was inspired by the previous generation model, it has got completely remodeled body panels, new interior, and renewed manual gearbox.
There will be no 1.4 Li engine anymore and all cars are going to be fitted with 8V 1.6-liter 86 hp engines and 16V 98 or 106 hp upgraded power units. Among value added features are the four-speed Jatco A/T, side air bags, multimedia system, and more up-to-date perks. From now on Kalinas are not going to be sold as sedans, but only as SUVs or five-door hatchbacks.
So far only the starting price for a Lada Kalina hatchback has been announced; it's 324,000 rubles (~$10,300) for the standard modification and ~$200 more expensive for the station wagon car.
The first vehicles to go on sale in June 2013 are full-featured hatchbacks and SUVs. AvtoVAZ car factory is planning to produce 70,000 new generation Kalinas until the end of the year.
