Batch production of the new KamAZ-5490 freight truck, which has been inspired by and developed using the same components and parts as in Mercedes Benz trucks, has started at KamAZ car plant on October 9. As of yet, the factory assembles only one truck—a two-axle freight vehicle—but later on the production line-up is seen to be expanded for a three-axle truck and 15-tonne dropside truck will be added into it. KamAZ-5490 is powered by the 12 Li 428 hp diesel Daimler OM 457LA engine coupled with ZF gearbox, which is in licensed production in Naberezhnie Chelny. KamAZ-5490 cabin has been borrowed from Mercedes-Benz Axor truck, but the nose of the truck was redesigned. Among the added features inside of the cabin are air suspension seats, air conditioning system, cruise control system, and adjustable steering column.
