Today, the last car in Lada Samara family—a white VAZ-2114 hatchback—rolled off the assembly line of AVTOVAZ car plant. Production of the three-door VAZ-2113 cars was suspended earlier this summer, while assembly of VAZ-2115 sedans had been cancelled a year ago. Lada Samara, or Lada Sputnik, was the first FWD car produced by VAZ. The first car prototype ever was finished late in 1978, but it was only in 1984 when the car make was ready for batch production. In order to accomplish this task the factory had to hire consultants from Porsche and purchase a few dozens of licenses for various components and assemblies from certain companies from abroad. In total, more than 5.2 mln Samara vehicles were produced between 1984 and 2013. Apart from Tolyatti, the cars were assembled in Syzran, Lutsk, Kherson, Zaporizhia, Ust Kamenogorsk (Kazakhstan), and even in Finland.
